The Repeal of No Child Left Behind: Historic Education Reform

Congressman GT Thompson
Member of Education & Workforce Committee

I have been working for seven years to repeal the provisions of No Child Left Behind that has been failing almost every child. I was honored to be appointed by Speaker Ryan to serve on the Conference Committee to resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions.

This morning I joined students, parent, teachers and my colleagues at a White House signing of a historic education reform. The Every Student Succeeds Act ends AYP reducing the pressure for standardized testing, provides an unprecedented reduction in the authority of the U.S. Secretary of Education, repeals 49 ineffective federal education programs and ends the Common Core mandate.

Additionally, ESSA includes language that I offered during the legislative process. This includes a study of Title I funding distribution to offset education disadvantages for children living in poverty; better promotion of parental engagement in education; and encouraging partnerships between schools and business/industry to promote programs leading to 21st Century in demand jobs. Our kids were the real winners today as the ESSA was signed into law and NCLB ended!
